Your information footprint

The distinction between a local draft, a saved browser preference and correspondence you choose to send.

Who is responsible

Ottermaplehorizn Earth Media Ltd is responsible for personal information it handles through this website and related correspondence. Our registered office is 22 High Street, Exeter EX4 3LN, United Kingdom; company no. 15418639. Contact [email protected] with privacy questions.

Reading the website

The site is a static publication. Its own code does not include advertising trackers, analytics scripts, account registration or an image-upload system. Requests to the hosting infrastructure necessarily disclose technical information such as an IP address, requested resource and browser headers. Hosting services may process access and security logs to deliver the site, investigate failures and protect against abuse.

The contact drafting tool

Subject and field-note text are processed locally in your browser to create a preview. The site code does not transmit that draft or store it in localStorage. Copying places text on your device clipboard; downloading creates a text file on your device. Your browser may retain form state according to its own settings. You control the resulting clipboard content and files.

If you send the draft by email, we receive your email address, message, any identifying information you include and relevant email metadata. Your email provider processes the message under its own terms. Do not send sensitive personal data or confidential location information unless a suitable arrangement has been made.

Purposes and legal grounds

We use received correspondence to answer questions, assess corrections, maintain editorial records and address privacy requests. Where applicable, we rely on legitimate interests in operating an independent publication and responding to voluntary correspondence. We may process information to comply with legal obligations or establish, exercise or defend legal claims. Consent, where requested for an optional purpose, may be withdrawn without affecting earlier lawful processing.

Preference storage

The preference controls on the Cookies page save a choice in browser localStorage. That choice is not a contact identity and is not sent by this site's code to an analytics service. You can replace it using those controls or remove it by clearing site storage. No optional tracking is activated by the current site code.

Sharing, security and retention

Hosting and email providers may process information as needed to provide their services. We do not sell personal information. Information may also be disclosed when required by law or necessary to address abuse or protect legal rights. Where international transfers occur, applicable data-protection safeguards must be used.

Correspondence is kept only as long as reasonably needed for its purpose, including resolving a query, maintaining a necessary correction record or meeting legal requirements. There is no fixed universal retention period for all messages. We take reasonable security measures, but no internet or email system is guaranteed to be completely secure.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction or portability of your personal information, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. We may need proportionate information to verify a request. Rights can be subject to legal exceptions. You may complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or another competent supervisory authority.

External links and updates

External sites have their own privacy practices. We are not responsible for their processing. If our practices change, this notice will be updated with an appropriate effective date. Please review it before sending information you consider sensitive.
